What types of nursing pads are there?
Disposable nursing pads
This type of pad is made of cellulose, used only once, and thrown away after use. The milk is absorbed by a highly absorbent core (similar to diapers). Disposable nursing pads come with 1-2 adhesive strips that hold the nursing pads in place in the bra – so they don't slip. Unlike washable nursing pads, they are usually smaller and less noticeable under tight tops. Some brands also offer special disposable nursing pads for nighttime use, which are larger than the day models and are also supposed to provide better leak protection.
The purchase price here is relatively low (starting at about 2.60 euros / 15 pairs), but it adds up to a considerable amount over time, which you should keep in mind when choosing nursing pads.
Washable nursing pads
In the long run, they are the more affordable alternative to disposable nursing pads, since they can simply be washed and reused after use. This way, they last several months – about 5 to 6 pairs are enough for the entire nursing period. However, the purchase price is somewhat higher for these (depending on the material, about 7-20 euros / 3 pairs).
Washable nursing pads are usually recommended by midwives, since nursing pads made of silk or wool have proven effective for sensitive, irritated nipples. Pure silk in particular has a soothing effect on the skin and helps regenerate sore nipples, so you can go back to breastfeeding your baby without problems as soon as possible. There are also (more affordable) nursing pads made of pure cotton, which conform very well to the breast and are especially absorbent.
Self-adhesive nursing pads
Meanwhile, there is also a third type of nursing pad which, unlike the ones mentioned above, does not absorb leaking milk but rather prevents unwanted milk leakage from the outset. They are made of silicone and adhere to the breast – this stops the unwanted flow of milk. Nevertheless, they are breathable, very comfortable to use, and can be worn without a bra – so also with a strapless dress, while swimming, or at night. For cleaning, just water and a bit of soap are enough, with which you can wash the silicone pads in seconds. Just like washable nursing pads, self-adhesive, non-absorbent nursing pads can be used for up to several months, which helps offset the higher price.
