Why strollers are so popular with parents

Agile, light, compact-folding, and small: a good stroller fits into any trunk and can be pushed into even the tightest corner of your favorite café. And at home, too, a stroller can be stored more space-efficiently than a large stroller.

Ideally, the stroller should be:

easy to push and maneuver
simple to fold up and store
uncomplicated to clean and maintain

In addition, the perfect stroller offers enough storage space for shopping, a diaper bag, and snacks on the go.

Checklist for buying a stroller: what you need to look out for

Age recommendation: Most strollers are approved for babies from 6 months of age. However, this only applies if your baby can already sit independently. Most children only learn this at around 9 months, and many even later.
Where you'll use it: Where do you want to use the stroller? A travel stroller for carry-on luggage should be as small and light as possible.
An outdoor stroller for walks on forest and field paths needs larger wheels with tread.
An all-round stroller for everyday use is a good compromise - lighter and more compact than a stroller with a stroller seat, yet still well-sprung and with as much lying surface as possible for the child and enough storage space.
Dimensions and weight: Do you want to take the stroller on the plane, or do you have limited space in the car? Then you need a lightweight stroller with a compact folded size.
Recline function and lying surface: Nowadays, almost every stroller has a recline function. But how flat can it be adjusted? And how big is the lying surface?
Comfort for the child: How well does the canopy protect against the sun? How softly padded is the seat ? Can the child rest its feet well? Are the straps well padded and won't cut in? This point is essential so your child enjoys sitting in the stroller.
Load capacity: Can the stroller hold up to 25 kg or only up to 15 kg? The higher the load capacity, the longer you can use the stroller.
Handling: Can the stroller be folded with one hand? Is the brake gentle on shoes? Can you fold up the bumper bar to the side? And how easy is it to open and close the harness? Customer reviews and test reports can help you here.
Wheels: The smaller the wheels, the less suitable the stroller is for rough terrain. On the other hand, strollers with small wheels are noticeably lighter and more compact.

All-round stroller for everyday use

Are you looking for a solid, everyday stroller that lets you comfortably transport your child from A to B - whether to daycare, the playground, the pediatrician, or your trusted drugstore?

Then look out for the following criteria when buying a stroller:

Good compromise: For the stroller to be comfortable for your child, the seat and lying surface should be more generous than, for example, with a travel stroller. For good handling, the rear axle shouldn't be too narrow, and the rear wheels shouldn't be too small.
Practical features: A one-hand fold mechanism, a backrest adjustable with one hand, and an easy-to-use harness buckle make everyday handling easier for you.
Load capacity: Choose a stroller that can support up to 22 or even 25 kg in weight. This way, you can use it for as long as possible for your child - and the frame will also better withstand regularly transporting heavy shopping.
Durability: A stroller used daily has to withstand a lot. So find out in advance, for example, through independent test reports and customer reviews, and take your time with your selection. With some well-known brands, unlike no-name products, you can even reorder spare parts if needed.

Compact travel stroller for vacation

Are you going on a trip and the large stroller is too bulky to take on the car, train, or plane? Then you need a small, lightweight travel stroller.

A good travel stroller should meet the following criteria:

Low weight - between 6 and 8 kg is realistic
Compact folded size - there are even strollers for carry-on luggage
Simple fold mechanism
Large sun canopy with UV protection
Carry bag and/or shoulder strap
For younger babies, possibly an adapter for the infant car seat

For flat and smooth surfaces, small travel strollers are generally completely sufficient. If you're going on an active outdoor vacation, however, you're better served by an off-road capable all-round stroller with better suspension and larger tires.

Jogging stroller for running and active walks

A jogging stroller (also called a jogger or sport stroller) is a special 3-wheel stroller for jogging, running, or inline skating. It's designed to safely and comfortably take your child along even at higher speeds.

A jogging stroller should have these features:

3 large air-filled wheels → provide stability and smooth rolling on asphalt, forest paths, or gravel
Wrist strap on the push handle → keeps the stroller under control if you trip
Lockable front wheel → important so the stroller stays on track
Good suspension → protects your child from jolts
Hand brake (often a disc brake) → especially helpful going downhill
5-point harness system → for maximum safety

If you want to buy an off-road capable stroller for active walks (not for jogging), a special jogging certification from TÜV is an advantage - but not strictly required. For jogging or skating, however, you should definitely look for this certification.

The most important questions about strollers

These features make a stroller comfortable for your child: a recline function for sleeping, a sufficiently large lying surface, a large canopy to protect against bright sunlight, a bar to hold on to, a sturdy footrest, comfortable padding, and a softly sprung chassis.

Every stroller sold in this country must comply with the European safety standard DIN EN 1888. This sets minimum technical requirements, including for materials (fabrics must be tear-resistant and comply with limits for harmful substances); stability and tip resistance (the stroller must not simply tip over under load); brake systems (a reliable parking brake is required); and safety harnesses (harness systems must securely hold the child and must not open on their own).

The decisive factor for switching from a stroller with bassinet to a stroller is primarily your baby's development - age is secondary. Your baby should be able to sit independently and steadily, have good head and trunk control, and curiously take in its surroundings. This is the case at the earliest from 6 months, often not until 9 or 10 months. If your baby cannot sit yet, you may use the stroller in the fully reclined position.

Yes, with the right accessories, it's possible to use the stroller from birth. Some manufacturers offer practical carry cots for babies (also called a soft carrycot or newborn stroller insert) that let you use the stroller even in the first months of life. Important: as long as your baby cannot sit up on its own, the backrest should be set flat. You should only go for walks on forest or field paths if the stroller has good suspension.

The stroller with a stroller bassinet is the safe and comfortable choice for your baby in the first months of life. As soon as your child can sit independently, your child first switches from the stroller bassinet to the stroller seat. The stroller is not a replacement for the stroller with bassinet, but the perfect addition once more flexibility is needed - light, compact, and perfect for everyday life on the go.

A lightweight, compact-folding travel stroller is best suited for air travel. Normally, you push the stroller to the gate and hand it over there. If the folded stroller is small enough to fit in the overhead bin, you can even check it as carry-on luggage - whether this works, however, depends on your airline's individual regulations. Large strollers/modular strollers and heavy sport or jogging strollers are not allowed in the cabin. These must be checked as oversized baggage (usually free of charge, but not cabin-compatible).
